Movement
The eight-day spring-driven double chain fusee brass movement has going and striking trains. The going train has a verge escapement with a short pendulum. The striking indicates the hour fully on a bell. The movement is wound at the back, which has an engraved backplate with Chinese-characters of the maker and motifs. The placename Shang Hai is engraved in a cartouche.

Dial
The circular white enamel dial is set in a rectangular chased gilt brass dial plate, embellished by characters and signs in Chinese style. The dial has a black Roman chapter ring with Arabic quarter divisions and a minute ring. The time is indicated by a fine pair of pierced blued-steel hands. In addition, there is a central sweep seconds hands.

Case
The rectangular Chinese rosewood case is embellished by elegant fretwork and carvings. The movement is situated in a removable wooden case, which is positioned on a base. The movement and dial are accessed by vertically sliding glazed panels. The sides have glazed windows allowing the movement to be visible. The base rest on four shaped wooden feet.
