POLYCHROME IRON WALL CLOCK WITH BALANCE
Circa 1600
South Germany

Movement
The weight-driven wrought iron movement of this polychrome iron wall clock is constructed between bars and consists of going and striking trains, as well as an alarm. The going train has a vertical verge escapement with a horizontal balance. The striking mechanism, regulated by a count wheel, indicates the hours fully on a bell.

Dial
The polychrome iron dial has a Roman chapter ring with black painted hour numerals and diamond-shaped half-hour markers. There are also touch pieces at the hour numerals, so that the time can also be determined in the dark. The turnable alarm disc, painted with a star motif in the centre of the dial has black Arabic numerals. The alarm time is set by inserting a screw belonging to the alarm disc in one of the 12 holes in the disc. The hour hand is mounted on the edge of the alarm disc.

Case
The iron case has a top and bottom plate, the dial plate at the front plate, a back cover and two side doors, which protect the movement. These are painted brown with curly leaf motifs in lighter colours. The bell for the striking and alarm mechanism is situated on top of the case in a painted bell strap, which is embellished by four decorative flowers and surmounted by a tulip-shaped finial. The back cover has two spikes and a hoop to hang the clock on the wall.
