SOUTH GERMAN WALL CLOCK WITH COW-TAIL PENDULUM
Circa 1750
South Germany
Movement
Weight-driven iron bird cage movement with iron bottom plate and double iron top plate. The movement has a verge escapement and a short pendulum with a sunburst pendulum bob. The pendulum moves in front of the dial, a so-called Kuhschwanzpendel (cow tail). The movement also has a striking mechanism controlled by a countwheel that indicates the hours fully on a bell.
Dial
The iron dial is painted and beautifully decorated. The chapter ring has Roman hour numerals, half-hour indications, Arabic five-minute divisions and minute strokes. A star motif is painted in the centre of the dial. Two cut brass hands indicate the time. A fret has been cut out at the top and painted in a scrolled leaf motif. The upper part under the fret is painted depicting a garland, flanked by sea creatures with other decorations in the shape of a grid.
Case
The painted iron case has a dial that protrudes beyond the case on all sides. Both sides have a door on which a flower bouquet in a vase is painted. Both doors are surmounted with the same pierced painted fret as on the front. The bell is situated on top of the case behind the frets and is surmounted by a wrought iron leaf and an iron finial.
